Hope | Psalm 40:2-3

Hope | Psalm 40:2-3

It is in the midst of these life-altering situations where God eventually picks us up, sets us on solid ground, and makes our footsteps firm.

Bible Verse

Psalms 40:2-3 (NASB) 2 He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD.

Hope

As I think back over life both before and since becoming a Christian, life is filled with times when I feel like I am sinking in quicksand.  These times come and go for a variety of reasons that I cannot explain.  What I do know is that in every case, these times ultimately serve to draw me closer to my God and my Father.  God uses these times to draw me closer to Him and they remind me that trust and hope can only be found in Him.  David was no stranger to hard times.  He was a great warrior and a man after God’s own heart.  Yet, he faced one challenge after another including a king who wanted him dead.  These challenging times drew David closer to his God and deepened his faith in Him.

Look at how David describes the situations we find ourselves in periodically.  Life can seem like a pit of destruction, or it can feel like we are stuck in a miry clay.  There are times when we can feel life has grabbed hold of us and is sucking us into ruin.  And yet, it is in the midst of these life-altering situations where God eventually picks us up, sets us on solid ground, and makes our footsteps firm.  Because He rescues us, we can sing songs of praise to Him.  His rescue opens our eyes so that we can see and fear Him.  And if we allow ourselves to be trained by these situations, our trust in Him is increased.

Application

Who among us does not want to have a closer walk with the God and Father of eternity?  He allows us to experience the things we experience so that we will learn to trust Him more.  And He uses the challenges we have overcome as stepping-stones to future ministry for His kingdom.  We must never allow difficult times to become a stumbling block in our relationship with God.

What difficulty have you recently experienced?

Have you allowed God to draw you closer to Himself through that time?

Allow God to use your circumstances to create a new song of hope and trust in Him

Prayer

Lord, thank You that in spite of my circumstances, You reach down and extract me.  You put my feet on solid ground.  Create in me a song of praise to You and a mindset of hope and faith in You.
