Adversity | Job 1:20-22

Adversity | Job 1:20-22

We all face adversity and in Job we have an example of how we should handle adversity in our lives.

Bible Verse

Job 1:20-22 20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” 22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

Adversity

Job faced unspeakable adversity in his life. He was a righteous man and followed God. Satan was looking for someone to devour. God asked if Satan had considered Job. God knew that Job would remain faithful to Him and allowed Satan to attack him. In the first Chapter of Job, we learn that Job was a man of high regard. He had great wealth, possessions, and he had 7 sons and 3 daughters. In this opening chapter of the book of Job, we see that Satan took everything that Job had. He lost his herds, his servants, and even all 10 of his children. And before one servant was done telling Job of a calamity, another showed up to tell him of yet another calamity. In a very short space of time, Job was told that he had lost his material possessions and his children. This is devastating news. In a display of his Godly nature, Job falls to the ground and worships God!

Application

In life we can face extreme adversity. God does not measure us by what we say. He measures us by what we do. What is meaningful in life is not the things we own, the money we have, or even the family we have built. And make no mistake, we did not do any of this. God provides us with all these things. What is meaningful in life is our relationship with Jesus and with God. Will we place all these things ahead of God or will we worship God even in adversity? Job sets a Godly example for us of how we should act in hard times. Upon receiving this devastating news Job did not wait. He stood up, walked outside, and fell down and worshiped God. Job realized what we would do well to learn. That we came into this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing. Everything in between is loaned to us by God.

Are you facing adversity?

Have you worshiped God in spite of your trying times?

Meditate on how Job handled the adversity he faced and ask God to show you how to humble yourself and worship Him.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the life that You have given me. Help me to react in adversity as Job reacted in adversity – to immediately worship You for Your goodness to me!
